Earthquake in the big apple

Zohran Mamdani winning is a political earthquake. It will have profound consequences for the Democratic Party going forward. Democratic primary voters have said very loudly that they want change and they want it now. I expect a lot of older Democrats will see the writing on the wall in a few weeks and announce retirement rather than go down in a primary. Looking especially at California 11, California 43 and New York 12.

In 2008, Senator Barack Obama had a message that resonated with younger voters, who, along with African American voters, formed an unbeatable coalition. He also connected with voters in a very real way. He was the right candidate at the right place at the right time. In 2018, AOC determined that Rep. Joe Crowley was not focusing on his job of representing his constituents. Her message was very focused and consistent. Zohran Mamdani ran a campaign focused on affordability in a city that is increasingly becoming unaffordable for the working class. He also resonated with young progressive voters in a time when progressive voters don’t have a lot of reason for hope. He relit that optimism and belief that things can get better. In all three instances, young, dynamic leaders emerged and took down Goliath. Obama was running against the former First Lady of the United States. AOC was running against a man that could have become the next Democratic Speaker of the House. Mamdani was running against the former three-term governor. The Democratic Party establishment would be wise to listen to our primary voters. In 2009, the conservative populist wing of the Republican Party was ascendant. In 2025, the progressive wing of the Democratic Party is ascendant. It’s imperative that Democrats unite and fight back against the incoming smear and fear that Republicans will use against Mamdani in the general. The racist, Islamophobic message that will be used from now until November is beginning to take shape on the right. Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani and his supporters now on to victory in November.
